Many times, new parents become overwhelmed with the question of is my baby getting enough.

But sometimes the problem is an over production of milk from the lactating parent. Over production of milk is characterized by more than 60mL per hour. Having an oversupply can overwhelm the baby and cause the parent some discomfort. Some behaviors that could explain overproduction are choking, pulling away from the breast, and feeding frequently. These behaviors can also be the effects of low supply, but there are ways to clarify which situation is the true issue. If the baby is gaining adequate weight and having adequate pee and poop diapers, it is safe to say the baby is getting the milk they need.

Sometimes the baby can become overwhelmed if the parents let down is forceful and comes quickly. When this happens if the baby cannot handle the quick flow, it can cause baby to choke or pull off the breast in order to catch their breath and swallow. Some ways of helping the baby be able to handle the flow of the milk is to change the position. If the parent can lie back slightly, gravity will help slow the flow of the milk to a more manageable flow. Another position that can help is the koala hold. In this position the baby is in a more sitting up position.

If the parent has an issue with oversupply, they have an increased risk of milk-stasis-related issues. Plugged milk ducts, mastitis, and abscess are all examples of problems related to problems with an oversupply of breastmilk. It is important to speak to a skilled IBCLC for help with planning a care plan to carefully decrease the milk production, but still maintain what the baby needs.

EARLY FEEDING CUES

As a new parent it can sometimes be stressful knowing when to feed your baby. It is important to learn what to look for and the cues your baby will give you. We encourage you to observe your baby instead of looking at the clock for the next feeding. Baby will be the best indicator telling you when they are hungry. As you get to know your baby you will be able to tell when they are hungry and respond during those early feeding cues. Tending to your infant during these early signs builds your confidence, build your baby’s trust, and helps to build your milk supply.

LATE FEEDING CUES

Many of us think that crying is an indicator that our baby is hungry when in fact this is a late feeding cue. A crying baby is harder to latch and to latch correctly. It is important to calm baby first before attempting to breastfeed. A good way to calm baby is to do skin to skin on your chest. Once baby is calm the transition to breast is a lot easier when you are already in a comfortable position. And remember, watching for those early feeding cues are key.

What is engorgement? Engorgement is when the breasts are full of milk, and it can be painful to breastfeed or pump.

What causes engorgement? When the breasts are producing more milk than the infant can intake.

How can you relieve engorgement? Relieving engorgement can be done by using different methods.

Breast compressions while feeding the baby

Expressing milk in between feeding

Breast massage and hand expressions

Breast massage while lying flat on your back and massaging away from the nipple

Cold compressions or ice packs

Lying flat on your back

Cabbage leaves in bra can help with inflammation

If you cannot relieve the symptoms of engorgement talk to your healthcare provider or make an appointment with an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) for further information and help. 3

Gifts will be given to each mother, light refreshments will also be provided. We will have a free raffle for a pack and play donated by Wellcare of Georgia.
